PROJECT OVERVIEW

Council is developing the 2025-2030 Destination Management Plan (DMP) to guide the sustainable growth of tourism over the next five years. This strategic initiative aims to position the Charters Towers Region as a top choice for visitors by highlighting its unique offerings, fostering community-driven development, and strengthening its competitiveness in the tourism market.

PROJECT GOALS

The DMP will focus on:

  • Enhancing Visitor Experience: Promoting Charters Towers’ natural beauty, cultural heritage, and local attractions to provide memorable experiences for visitors.
  • Driving Economic Impact: Supporting local businesses, creating jobs, and encouraging new investment to enhance the region’s economic vitality.
  • Encouraging Sustainable Growth: Ensuring tourism growth that benefits the community, respects our heritage, and aligns with environmental sustainability.
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement: Involving local voices, businesses, and stakeholders to create a plan that reflects the community’s values and long-term vision.

WHY NOW?

Our existing plan, developed in 2019 and implemented in July 2020, provided an initial framework for growth, but significant changes—including the impact of COVID-19—have since reshaped the tourism landscape. Updating our strategy is essential to adapt to these changes and ensure Charters Towers remains a competitive, attractive destination.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

We’re committed to building a DMP that represents the priorities and aspirations of our community. To achieve this, we are inviting residents, businesses, and stakeholders to participate in public workshops and a community survey. Share your ideas, help shape the region’s future, and make an impact by joining one of the engagement opportunities:

Public Workshops - These sessions have been held

Where: Local Disaster Coordination Centre, 10 Mosman Street, Charters Towers

When: Monday, 18 November 2024; 5:30pm - 7:30pm & Tuesday, 19 November 2024; 2pm - 4pm

Survey:

For those who can't attend in person, an online survey can be completed
Hardcopies are also available at the Visitor Information Centre.

Submissions close 2 December 2024

  • Charters Towers Regional Council, in partnership with consultants Stafford Strategy, is developing a Destination Management Plan (DMP) to set the groundwork for sustainable growth, economic resilience, and balanced development for the visitor economy. This plan will align economic goals with the Region's social, environmental, and cultural values, strengthening the visitor economy while preserving the unique character of the Charters Towers Region.

Importantly, it's about having a path for tourism to truly support our industry, the quality of life of our community and our high-quality environment.

You may see some similar questions to the recent Economic Development Strategy Survey.   Please note that while there is some crossover, they are two separate projects and the DMP will focus solely on tourism and visitor economy.

We invite you to share your thoughts on the future of our visitor economy.  All responses are confidential and anonymous, sent directly to Stafford Strategy, and will only be presented in a combined format.

Submissions will close on 2 December 2024.
