PROJECT OVERVIEW

Council is dedicated to improving waste management within our region. As part of this commitment, we are developing a comprehensive waste strategy, and we need the community’s input to shape its direction.

Historically, waste management improvements have been achieved through ad-hoc initiatives and responses to changing regulations, such as the waste levy and landfill licensing. Now, our focus is shifting long-term, with a vision of a sustainable future for our community. To guide this new direction, Council conducted a survey to understand what matters most to the community regarding waste management.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the residents of Charters Towers, Council is exploring options to recover more waste and resources and send less waste to landfill. As a unique regional Queensland council, we must understand your values and priorities for improving waste management in our community.

Council is considering proposing improvements to waste services, however, with geographical limitations, low population and limited access to waste processing facilities, we asked the community what Council should prioritise to help inform a strategy.

DRAFT STRATEGY - FEEDBACK CLOSED

Following closure of the survey, a draft strategy has been developed and lays out an approach to improving waste management in our community and the direction we will take from 2025 to 2035. The Strategy is a ten-year plan that identifies the goals we want to achieve, and the objectives and actions we will take to accomplish our vision.

The development of the Strategy took into consideration existing Council plans, policies, and relevant drivers on the national, state, and regional levels.

The draft strategy:

  • Identifies the current waste situation in Charters Towers, where we want to be, and how we will get there;
  • Provides a framework for planning and infrastructure development;
  • Sets a roadmap for Council’s provision of better waste management and resource recovery options;
  • Includes community input to tailor waste management to our region; and
  • Guides waste management in Charters Towers in the right direction for the next ten years.

Community feedback is now sought on the DRAFT STRATEGY prior to finalisation of the document and adoption by Council.

Feedback closed on Wednesday, 18 December 2024.
